Lichen Silhouette Pieces
The pieces below are from my graduate collection at Monash University. The lichen pieces were inspired by a trip out to old gold rush country in a town called Avoca, located a bit further west than Ballarat, in Victoria. There was a huge amount of Quartz rocks to be found everywhere. I took lots of photos of rocks and gum trees, but what i found most interesting was the lichen that grew in patches everywhere.

I used Photoshop and Illustrator to isolate small sections of the lichen and arrange them into 2D images. These images where then hand-cut and etched out of Copper. All of the pieces are soldered together and bent by hand into 3D forms. These 3D forms are experimented with but not pre-determined, all of the shapes moved naturally into their final forms.

Vogue Body and Beauty Pieces
The following two pieces explore femininity and mother/daughter relationships. The inner profiles of faces and hairstyles are images from a Vogue body and beauty book that my mother gave me. The outer forms of Hibiscus flower petals and leaves come from and leaves that my mother had pressed between the pages of the book. The pendants are difficult to create, there is always a chance of slicing off a corner. I was very interested to find that this creates a relationship between the maker and the piece, much like between two people. Hair is closely associated with femininity, styled on the body or forcibly removed. I have used silver cotton thread that resembled hair very closely to hang the pendants around the neck.

Garlic Amulet Pieces
Garlic has long been believed to have extremely powerful protective and healing properties. In the development of these pieces I investigated the origins of folklore and medicinal uses for garlic. I have endeavoured to create an amulet that harbours some of this protective power, whilst also demonstrating some of the subtleties of the garlic form. I have used rope to string up the latex and silk centrepieces, as a reference to the way garlic can be strung up around the kitchen and doorways to repel evil spirits and absorb negative energy.

Wallpaper Series
The images for the following pieces were drawn from patterns on some wallpaper, I was experimenting with using 2D images to create 3D forms. The brooch in this series uses the off-cuts of copper as a feature of the design.
